SMHAW 2025 Webinar SERIES

Out of Spoons: Understanding and Supporting Neurodivergent Student Burnout

with Brandon Gernux

Monday, May 5th from 5:00 PM-6:00 PM

Neurodivergent students are burning out, but too often, their exhaustion is misunderstood, dismissed, or punished. In this webinar, we’ll explore the concept of neurodivergent burnout—what it is, how it shows up in schools, and what school counselors can do to help. We’ll dive into the lived experiences of autistic, ADHD, and otherwise neurodivergent students across different grade levels and identify common signs that students are out of their capacity.

Grounded in Spoon Theory, a framework developed by chronically ill and disabled communities to describe energy and capacity, this session will help educators recognize what it means when a student is “out of spoons”—and how our systems and expectations may be contributing to that depletion. Participants will leave with practical tools and trauma-informed, neurodiversity-affirming strategies for prevention, intervention, and recovery.
